(SANFORD, FL) – Seminole County Public Schools (SCPS) Superintendent Dr.
Walt Griffin has announced his retirement from the district for the Spring of 2021.
Walt has been an educator for 40 years, 37 of those here in Seminole County. Throughout his exceptional career, he has served as a Math Teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, High School Executive Director, and for the past nine years, as Superintendent.
During his tenure as Superintendent, while working with an extraordinary team and board, there are now no remaining “D” or “F” schools in Seminole County. In addition, there has been a massive increase in vocational, career and technical education programs and course enrollment. Minority enrollment in gifted education and advanced courses has exponentially increased. There is a Pre-K Program in all elementary schools and the Great Start Program for infants and their parents has been underway for seven years. Computer Science is being taught at all levels, physics buses are running at the elementary schools, and physics instruction is beginning at middle schools.
Seminole County’s graduation rate is currently at its highest in the district’s history at 92.8%, which is #1 in Central Florida and #1 of the 17 largest districts in Florida.
Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate Program (IB)
participation and proficiency is at an all-time high. In addition, SCPS has earned an “A” rating from the Florida Department of Education for more than 20-years.
The SCPS and Seminole State College Partnership has been recognized as a national model for K-20 collaboration that benefits our students and community. Thanks to the great relationship with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office and our local police municipalities, there is a robust School Safety Program in place.
While Dr. Griffin will sorely miss serving the amazing students, families, and staff in Seminole County, he is greatly looking forward to spending quality time with his wife, two children, grandchildren, friends, and family.
