SANFORD, Fla. (Sept. 13, 2019) – Best-selling author Nick Carr will speak at Seminole State College of Florida as part of the College’s Speaker Series at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus. Carr focuses on the intersection of technology, economics and culture and will be presenting on “What Our Smartphones are Doing to Our Minds.”

A journalist by trade, Carr received his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and a master’s degree in English and American literature from Harvard University. Over the course of his career, Carr has written for The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, The New York Times and Wired. He has written several acclaimed books, including Utopia is Creepy: And Other Provocations and The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains, which was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in 2011 and a New York Times bestseller. He maintains the blog Rough Type where he first explores themes surrounding technology that he later develops into formal publications. 

The talk will center around the impact that smartphones and social media have had on us as a society and the way we live. Smartphones have brought a wealth of easily accessible information, but with that, they have also brought increased anxiety about the extent of their influence on us. Carr will draw on recent scientific research to examine the different costs of technology and the effects of those costs on our psychology and social lives. 

This event is free and open to the public. The presentation will conclude with a Q&A period. A reception and book signing will immediately follow the presentation.
